Not a comedian as such, more of a satirical commentator. If you see his current TV work you’ll be not the least surprised that he wrote for the classic Chris Morris series The Day Today and Brass Eye.

His pieces in the Guardian are often good too.

His recent onscreen success started with Screenwipe, a ruthless deconstruction of telly goings-on. It was followed by a one-off Gameswipe and two series so far of Newswipe which is more topical that Screenwipe, with lots of stuff about the previous week in the news along with with some general items.

He can get a bit whiny at times but at his best (most of the time) he’s abrasive, perceptive and very funny.

Ross Noble

It can take a while to tune into the Geordie accent and the rapid-fire ideas flying all over the place. It really is worth the effort, if you can call it that. Ross Noble has just about the most agile comic mind QNI has ever come across. He doesn’t seem to rehearse or ever do the same show twice. On his Randomist tour, for instance, most of his set was made up of dealing with objects (lots of vegetables) audience members had thrown on stage before the show.

And he makes it look easy. Any stumble or error is transformed into a new tangential tale that somehow then curves back and merges with some previous subject matter and it all comes together before he flies off again.

Stay with his ramblings and meanderings and you’re rewarded with a fantastic voyage into his brain. Inspiring and exhausting.

Limmy

Like many people in comedy Limmy zooms in on some minute aspect of life and makes it more or less funny. But he fixes on very unusual subjects, and dissects every aspect of them.

At its best his comedy is hilarious and disconcerting.

He can sometimes leave you wondering if he was joking, or if it was even funny. It may not be to everyone’s taste.

Only available on Scottish telly and BBC4 as far as QNI knows (and the www of course).
