There’s a grand tradition in Britain, well, at the BBC specifically, of comedy transferring from radio to television once it’s proved itself.
Good examples: Flight of the Conchords, The Mighty Boosh, League of Gentlemen, Little Britain, On The Hour/The Day Today, Mitchell and Webb Sound/Look, and very recently Down the Line/Bellamy’s People.
Mitchell and Webb are an interesting case because although in the past many of their TV sketches started off on the radio, nowadays they seem to have made a clear separation, and they do different sketches for radio, ones that need the imagination rather than images to work properly. So they really are applying themselves to the specific qualities of the medium.
Monty Python also reworked and created special material for their classic albums.
Although QNI events are all about video comedy, radio has something unique of its own to offer, so that’s why it’s getting it’s own corner here. If it’s good it can bear more listenings than a video can watchings. Not better. Different.
